Star-Club – 50th Anniversary – Fliegende Bauten, Hamburg 12.04.2012

Ladies & Gentlemen, the 13th April 1962 was a memorable date! The Star-Club opened its doors at Große Freiheit 39 in Hamburg-St. Pauli. The club become legendary with concerts of The Beatles, Chuck Berry, Billy Haley, The Rattles and even Jimi Hendrix;  just to name a few acts. And in 2012 it was the celebration & commemoration of 50YEARS Star-Club Hamburg in the stylish Fliegende Bauten tent-alike venue. It was sold-out and packed. Therefore it was hard, sweaty work
for us photograpers to find an excellent spot to obtain good pictures.

It was Brian Parrish ex the Londoners to hold the laudation. He was calling Uwe Mamminga, the organiser of Rock The Earth on stage to welcome the crowd and sponsors and his good-old friend Kingsize Taylor. He was the musician-hero who contributed to get all bands and musicians to the festival.

The festival was also a charity event in favour of :

The party started with the The Creapers.  5 younger musicians, dressed in leather to keep up the spirit of The Beatles. They played with the same instruments as their faves. The performance was songs from their 60’ies era at the Club.  They were thrilling and keeping up the musical spirit and tradition.

Brian Parrish performed like a real rock-star on stage. It was for the beginning hard blues-time with the Muddy Waters classic “Mannish Boy”. His voice was still amazingly  strong and the atmosphere was boiling for the first time. “Many Moons Ago” was another highlight-song.

The cheering crowd appealed next for the “King of Star-Club”. It was show-time for KINGSIZE TAYLOR  & the Brotherhood of Rock’N Roll. His performance was really legendary and explosive. Songs like “Mama Come Home”, “Bony Moronie” or Mustang Sally” made the crowd cheer and dance like wild and turned the tent into a tollhouse.

He was joined on stage by some guests: First Beryl Marsden, being one of the few succesfull teen singers in the club-start. She convinced by her charme and power.

Second it was Karl Terry. His performance was a real dynamite-one. His singing was tremendous, but it was specially his acting of shaking his hips, jumping in the air, splits that were eye-blowing. He even would have been ready to strip off his cool red 60’ies style suit. The loudest applause of the evening, specially also by the ladies was his…

The blues returned by the performance of Mike Harrison. He was the frontman of Spooky Tooth and also the Hamburg Blues Band. “Evil Women” was his top song.

Ecki Hoffmann was the hot saxophone-player for this whole set.

The Nashville Teens started their performance by “Hoochie Koochie Man”, best known by Muddy Waters. Specially they performed some hits in tribute to their legends The Who like “My Generation”. They were the hard-rockers this evening.

The crazy maniacs desired some soul-music next. The spirit of the Blues Brothers and James Brown was in the house by Cliff Bennett. The Star-Club-Allstars featuring Howie Casey, Adrian Askew, Clem Clempson and Roy Dyke were his band specially for this occasion. Howie Casey, legendary saxophonist, playing also with Paul McCartney, was heating up the atmosphere by his steamin’ solos.  Adrian Askew was the honky-tonk-wizard on piano. Clem Clempson was to shine again with his brilliant guitar-hooks. The rhythm-stick-magician was the one- & only Roy Dyke on drums. He was well remembered being member of Remo-Four and Ashton, Gardner & Dyke. What an unbelievable power-drummer he still is. And Cliff Bennet he was the entertainer and loud-voiced “Soul-Man” of the evening.

The party was going on till early Saturday-morning in the Fliegende Bauten and the stars were chatting and drinking with the fans.

The festival continued on 13th of April, details of acts to be seen here: http://www.50-jahre-starclub.de/

The Star-Club as unforgettable “Holy Grail of Rock´N´ Roll & Blues”  will live on forever in the music-hearts!
